A Class of Their Own From Covering Up to Revealing Myself: Liberation and feeling limitless. Lessons from Charanjit Toor
Growing up with a disability is not easy. Charanjit Toor was born with an underdeveloped arm, she shares her journey from childhood trauma to self-acceptance.
Growing up, Charanjit suppressed her emotions and never felt comfortable in her own skin. In an Indian family where appearance was heavily emphasised, the lack of empathy and hurtful comments from the Asian community only added to her struggles. Charanjit felt the weight of responsibility for her disability, striving to shield her parents from the pain too.
She recounts as a teenager, how she received praise for losing weight, leading to an eating disorder. She sought control over her weight, but it only damaged her relationships and health. Choosing to study law to improve her prospects, she reflects on the internal confidence and external criticisms that shaped her journey to self-love, determined not to allow the cycle to repeat with her children.
Charanjit openly discusses her experiences with therapy, her dependency with her prosthetic arm, rejection and loss.
This episode focuses on self-acceptance, mental and emotional health, healing past trauma, empowering women, therapy, living with disabilities and physical fitness.
