Hitler's invasion of Austria and the enthusiastic reception
Hitler invades Austria, forcing the resignation of Chancellor Schuschnigg and the appointment of a Nazi, Seys-Inquart. The Austrian people cheer and celebrate Hitler's arrival, reinforcing his sense of mission and greatness. Austria is absorbed into Germany as a province, losing autonomy and institutions. Repression and persecution of Jews and other groups intensify, with Jewish-owned businesses seized and anti-Semitic violence rampant. The Nazis begin the process of expelling Jews from Austria.
Hitler's psychological response to the Austrian annexation
Hitler's emotional response to the enthusiastic reception in Austria fuels his Messiah complex and reinforces his belief that he is fulfilling a historic mission. He becomes determined to absorb Austria completely into the German Reich, erasing its national identity. Austria becomes a German province, its institutions and resources plundered by the Nazis. The repression and persecution of opposition groups, particularly Jews, escalates horrifically.
The Nazis' long-term plans for Austria
The Nazis swiftly take control of Austria, replacing local authorities with German officials and erasing Austrian autonomy. Austria's Jewish population faces increased violence and persecution, with businesses seized and brutal treatment. The Gestapo and SS have significant control, suppressing any resistance to Nazi occupation. The Nazis implement a central agency for Jewish emigration, overseen by Adolf Eichmann, accelerating the forced emigration of Jews from Austria.
Hitler's popularity and next ambitions
Hitler's successful annexation of Austria increases his popularity in Germany. He is seen as a statesman fulfilling nationalist aspirations, having accomplished his aims without provoking war. However, Hitler is already planning his next move, targeting Czechoslovakia. The von Trapp family, who were not Jewish, escape Austria and travel to the United States.
Nazi perspective and upcoming persecution of Jews in Germany
In the next episode, the focus will shift to examining Nazi perspectives and understanding their motivations and beliefs. The worsening plight of Jews in Germany will be explored, including increased discrimination and persecution, as well as their attempts to emigrate. The von Trapp family's escape to the United States will be contrasted with the typically more difficult circumstances faced by Jewish individuals.
By 1937, Hitler’s ever-growing ambitions were driving Europe to the brink of war. Ever restless, he knew that Germany must conquer the world, or be destroyed. His first target was Austria, his homeland, whose annexation to Germany would unite German blood under one indomitable Reich. However, in an effort to avoid Nazi rule, the Austrian Chancellor, Kurt Schuschnigg, called a referendum on annexation, to show the Austrian people’s will against it. Hitler’s reaction was one of rage, and on the morning of Friday, the 11th of March, 1938, he sent an ultimatum to Vienna. At 5.30am the next day, the German army crossed into Austria. It was met by great cheering crowds, and Hitler’s arrival in Vienna was one of true apotheosis… Yet the darkness at the heart of Hitler’s European dream was also emerging, as the Nazis began to detain and repress Austrian minorities, particularly the Jewish population, on an unprecedented scale.
Join Tom and Dominic as they discuss the annexation of Austria, and the post-war myth of Austria’s victimisation at the hands of Hitler and the Nazis. They also look at the Nazis’ first acts of violence, discrimination and deportation against Vienna’s Jewish population, prefiguring the horrors to follow.
