Innovations in Chinese Academics and STEM Fields
China has made significant advancements in education, specifically in STEM fields. Over the past 20 years, the number of high school graduates going to college has increased dramatically. More than 50% of college students in China major in STEM subjects, such as biology, engineering, and computer science, surpassing the US in these areas. This trend indicates that China is producing a large number of highly educated professionals who are at the research frontier, demonstrating a shift towards innovation and growth in academic and technological fields.
Demographic Challenges and Societal Expectations in China
Contrary to the idea of a demographic collapse in China, the country has a different demographic structure and societal expectations compared to Western nations. The upcoming workforce in China, already born, will consist of highly educated individuals in various fields, potentially outmatching global standards in terms of STEM graduates. Additionally, the retirement expectations in China differ significantly from those in the West. Many individuals who worked in labor-intensive jobs during China's development era have more modest retirement expectations, preferring a simpler lifestyle close to family and with adequate sustenance. This unique perspective could impact China's demographic challenges in the future.
