Deep dives
The Importance of Trying Life On
In this podcast episode, Maurice Philijean discusses the significance of trying life on and not accepting the status quo. He shares his personal journey of trying out different professions and experiences, such as being an actor, NFL tryouts, street cop, military officer, and real estate executive, all at the same time. Maurice emphasizes the importance of filling one's life with diverse experiences and relationships, and how having more passive income than expenses can provide the freedom to access life as intended.
The Power of Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone
Maurice recounts two stories that illustrate the power of stepping out of one's comfort zone and trying life on in different ways. At the age of 15, a trip to Paris opened his eyes to the vast possibilities beyond his inner city Boston upbringing, inspiring him to explore and seek a better life. Later, when he was 26 and working in the corporate world, he pursued his passion for football by going back to grad school and trying out for the NFL. Maurice encourages listeners to ask better questions, pursue their interests, and try different things.
The Five Freedoms and Examples of Trying Life On
Maurice introduces the concept of the five freedoms: time freedom, geographic freedom, financial freedom, freedom to execute on one's purpose, and freedom to build meaningful relationships. He provides examples of individuals he has coached who have successfully implemented these freedoms in their lives. One example is a marketing executive who left a high-paying corporate job to simplify her life, work remotely, and travel the world. Another example is a nonprofit worker who transitioned to consulting, allowing her to have more freedom, higher income, and a mobile lifestyle. Maurice emphasizes the importance of designing a life that doesn't require vacationing from and encourages listeners to build a lifestyle they don't want to escape from.
In today’s kickoff episode, Maurice Philogene records from a studio in Beirut, Lebanon—one of his most visited destinations to date. ‘Trying Life On’ in Beirut, a dear friend of his opened the door to a recording studio so he could start the podcast and explain his 25 year journey across the world and careers, investing in real estate and starting businesses.
