Deep dives
The impact of patriarchal expectations on boys
Boys are expected to conform to the rigid gender norms set by patriarchy, which demands that they give up certain qualities and emotions in order to be considered masculine. This process begins at a young age, around three or four, and continues throughout their lives. The pressure to conform often leads boys to suppress their emotions and deny half of their humanity. This can be traumatic and prevent boys from fully exploring their identities.
The reinforcement of gender stereotypes
The culture reinforces gender stereotypes by dividing qualities and characteristics into masculine and feminine categories. Boys are discouraged from expressing so-called 'feminine' traits like vulnerability and nurturing, while being reinforced to prioritize power, independence, and invulnerability. This binary perpetuates harmful societal expectations and restricts the ability of boys to fully embrace their authentic selves.
The importance of open conversations
Parents can play a crucial role in helping their sons navigate the pressures of masculine expectations. By engaging in open and honest conversations, parents can help boys understand the choice they face and the potential consequences of conforming or rejecting traditional gender norms. It is important for parents to support their sons in maintaining their whole selves and challenge the idea that vulnerability and sensitivity are weaknesses.
Pushing for cultural change
While individual efforts are essential, it is equally important to work towards broader cultural change. Challenging and dismantling patriarchal expectations is necessary to create a world where boys and girls are not limited or forced to conform to harmful gender stereotypes. By advocating for acceptance and celebrating the wholeness of all individuals, we can create a more inclusive and compassionate society.
Writer Ben James and his wife Oona are raising their sons in a progressive and “queer-friendly” New England town. They actively encourage the boys to be themselves, never mind those traditional gender norms around “masculinity” and “femininity.” All was well. Until the elder son, Huck, went to sixth grade. Story by Ben James, with hosts Celeste Headlee and John Biewen, and psychologist Terrence Real.
