The advent of the printing press had significant economic and social implications. The mass production of writing facilitated by Gutenberg's invention dramatically reduced the cost of books, making them more affordable to the general public. This led to a surge in the production of printed material, with more books being printed in the first century after the printing press than had been hand-copied in all of pre-Gutenberg Europe.
