Apologist and author Jimmy Akin discusses the presence of allusions to the Deuterocanonicals in the New Testament. Jesus' teaching on forgiveness is linked to the Deuterocanonicals. Suggestions for further reading on this topic are provided.
The New Testament contains allusions to the Deuterocanonicals, indicating that Jesus and the New Testament authors picked up and developed teachings from these books just as they did with other Scriptures.
The New Testament refers to historical events mentioned in the Deuterocanonicals, such as the story of the seven brothers who were martyred in 2 Maccabees 7, suggesting that 2 Maccabees is recognized as one of the books of the Old Testament by the author of Hebrews.
Deep dives
Deuterocanonicals are referred to in the New Testament
Contrary to the claim that Jesus and the New Testament authors do not refer to the Deuterocanonical Scripture, the New Testament actually contains several allusions to these books. While there may not be clear quotations from them, or even from many proto-canonical books of the Old Testament, the New Testament does contain clear illusions to the Deuterocanonicals. For instance, Jesus' teaching about God's forgiveness being linked to our forgiveness of others is expressed in the Lord's Prayer and is also found in the Deuterocanonical Book of Cyrak. This indicates that Jesus picked up and developed teachings from the Deuterocanonicals just as he did with other Old Testament Scriptures.
The New Testament refers to historical events recorded in the Deuterocanonicals
In addition to alluding to teachings found in the Deuterocanonicals, the New Testament also refers to the historical events mentioned in these books. The Book of Hebrews, for example, lists various Old Testament figures who pleased God by their faith, including some who were tortured and refused release to obtain a better resurrection. This specific combination of events is only found in the story of the seven brothers who were martyred in 2 Maccabees 7. The author of Hebrews, by including this reference, seems to recognize 2 Maccabees as one of the books of the Old Testament.

One of Jesus’ most famous teachings is that God’s willingness to forgive us is linked to our willingness to forgive others. This is expressed, for example, in the Lord’s Prayer: “A…
