Deep dives
Ian Schrager's Legacy in Hospitality
Ian Schrager reflects on his 40-year journey in the hotel industry, emphasizing his passion for creating unique experiences. He describes how he never initially recognized his capabilities but credits his drive and love for the craft as the reasons for his enduring success. Schrager is proud of introducing the boutique hotel concept with his first venture, Morgan's, alongside Steve Rubell. His vision focused on delivering something unprecedented, which continues to inspire him as he evolves within the hospitality landscape.
The Inevitability of Change in Boutique Hotels
Schrager discusses the diminishing meaning of the term 'boutique,' arguing that it has lost its original significance due to oversaturation in the industry. He compares his vision for hotels to Apple's approach in focusing on a narrowly defined mission, suggesting that genuine boutique establishments prioritize quality of experience over size. In response to the industry's shift, he now prefers the term 'lifestyle hotel' to encapsulate the approach that defines his projects. This perspective reflects his desire to maintain authenticity in an evolving market.
Parting Ways with Marriott
After a remarkable 15-year collaboration, Schrager announces his decision to part ways with Marriott and the Addition hotel brand. He describes how this partnership, initially met with skepticism, ultimately became a highly enriching experience that sharpened his skills. Schrager credits the late Arne Sorensen, former CEO of Marriott, for sharing a vision of excellence and innovation that aligned with his own. While grateful for the journey, he recognizes the importance of transitioning to new ventures and continuing to challenge himself creatively.
Reimagining Public Hotels
Schrager shares his ambitious vision for the Public Hotels brand, which seeks to offer affordable yet sophisticated accommodations that appeal to a broader audience. He cites the inspiration behind earlier projects, such as the Paramount and Hudson hotels, which aimed to provide exceptional communal spaces despite budget constraints. The Public Hotels concept aims to democratize luxury, making high-quality experiences accessible to everyone, not just the elite. He believes this approach reflects a moral imperative to cater to diverse audiences while maintaining high standards of design and service.
The Essence of Time and Experience in Hospitality
Schrager delves into the concept of 'hotel time,' exploring the blurred lines between hotels, offices, and residential spaces. He believes that a unique hotel experience should evoke a sense of tranquility and freedom for guests, allowing them to escape the complexities of everyday life. Emphasizing the importance of creating atmospheric environments, he asserts that true luxury lies in providing guests with the free time to pursue their desires. This philosophy underpins his approach to hospitality, which seeks to capture the essence of a place while also delivering meaningful experiences.

Since the early 1980s, Schrager has devised and developed more than 20 ahead-of-the-curve hospitality properties, including the Public hotel (2017) in New York City and the Edition line of hotels, as well as, going further back, the Morgans (1982), the Paramount (1990), the Hudson (2000), and the Gramercy Park Hotel (2006) in New York; the Mondrian (1996) in Los Angeles; the Delano (1995) in Miami; St. Martins Lane and the Sanderson (both 1998) in London; and the Clift (2000) in San Francisco. Beyond designing for mere aesthetic appreciation, Schrager cultivates places with a soul and spirit all their own.
