Deep dives
Using AI to Improve Vaccination Rates in Nigeria
One Nigerian social enterprise, Help Mom, is leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to address the problem of low vaccination rates in the country. Through a vaccination tracking system, mothers are sent digital reminders of appointments, enabling doctors to track who has received vaccinations and who still needs them. However, Help Mom realized that reminders alone were not enough if mothers lacked the financial means to take their children for immunizations. To tackle this, they developed an AI software called the vaccination advisor, which identifies the challenges mothers face and connects them to solutions such as education, home visits, bus vouchers, or taxi pickups. This innovative use of AI has resulted in a significant increase in vaccination rates, from 40% to 75%, and has benefited over 100,000 mothers in Nigeria.
AI in Self-Driving Cars and Recycling Robots
AI is being embraced in various sectors for solving different problems. One notable application is self-driving cars, which use AI algorithms to respond to road situations and make decisions. However, there have been concerns about safety and accidents involving self-driving cars. Another interesting use of AI is in recycling robots. Companies have developed AI-powered robots that identify and sort different types of recyclable materials, improving recycling rates. By training the robots to recognize images of various objects, their AI systems can sort plastics more effectively, addressing a major challenge in recycling. These examples highlight the diverse ways in which AI is being utilized to tackle real-world problems.
Understanding Animal Behavior and AI-Powered Mental Health Support
AI is not only solving physical problems but also helping us understand the behavior of animals and supporting mental health. In Israel, researchers are using AI to analyze the vocalizations of bats, creating a translator that can understand the context and meaning of their sounds. This technology can aid in studying animal behavior and contribute to conservation efforts. Additionally, AI is being used in mental health support through platforms like Claire and Me. Using cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), an AI-powered chatbot named Claire interacts with users, guiding them through exercises and providing support. This approach helps reduce stigma, enables personalized support, and addresses the shortage of mental health professionals in many areas.
Artificial intelligence can sometimes provoke fear and anxiety. Will it take away our jobs? Will it take over the world? So it’s important to recognise some of the good things AI is being used for.
We look at how AI chatbots are helping people tackle anxiety, how AI is being used in Africa to lower infant mortality and even speak to the team using AI to try and communicate with bats.
