Lukas Gentele, Co-Founder & CEO of Loft, discusses his platform engineering company, which focuses on Kubernetes virtualization to promote efficiency in high-usage environments. He shares insights on the evolution of VCluster and how it's shaping developer autonomy. Lukas highlights the importance of a strong feedback loop in an open-source ecosystem and stresses that open-source founders should embrace commercialization early on. He also unveils innovative approaches to cost reduction, like the Sleep Mode feature, enhancing the business case for virtual Kubernetes clusters.
Loft pivoted from developing DevSpace to VCluster, focusing on Kubernetes virtualization to enhance efficiency and reduce costs for users.
The journey emphasized the significance of user feedback in shaping product development and aligning solutions with genuine market needs.
Deep dives
Origins of Loft and DevSpace
The inception of Loft took place with the development of its foundational project, DevSpace, which aimed to simplify the experience of working with Kubernetes. Launched in 2018, DevSpace was a collaborative effort between the founder and his co-founder, drawing from their previous experiences in the tech industry. They discovered significant interest and feedback from the community upon releasing DevSpace on GitHub, which fueled their passion for open-source development. Despite not being commercially viable, this initial venture provided valuable insights and set the stage for Loft's subsequent projects.
The Transition to VCluster
The failure to monetize DevSpace led the founders to pivot towards creating VCluster, focusing on delivering a more efficient solution for managing Kubernetes environments. They recognized the challenges engineers faced while using Kubernetes and aimed to streamline operations by allowing users to share Kubernetes clusters without compromising functionality. The development of VCluster was informed by earlier learnings, including the importance of quickly validating concepts and gathering user feedback. This approach enabled the team to refine their product and ensure it met genuine market needs.
Emerging Use Cases and Applications
VCluster proved to be more versatile than initially anticipated, finding applications in development, CI environments, and even production settings. Users realized the time and cost efficiencies it offered, particularly when managing multiple clusters, as they could test their applications against various Kubernetes versions without the overhead of spinning up full clusters. Early adopters, such as a data management company, showcased the significant cost savings achieved by switching to VCluster from traditional EKS clusters. The unexpected use cases that emerged emphasized the potential of VCluster as a foundational technology for different operational needs.
User-Centric Product Development
The path of developing DevPod, a new tool for streamlined development environments, was informed by direct feedback from users and an understanding of market needs. This approach contrasted with earlier methods where commercialization was less of a focus, allowing for a more structured pathway to product launch. The team emphasized the importance of aligning technical development with user requirements, leading to a more effective market strategy. This experience reflects a shift towards a more user-centric model that drives profitability while continuously enhancing the product experience.
Lukas Gentele is Co-Founder & CEO of Loft, the platform engineering company behind "kubernetes virtualization" to reduce costs and create efficiencies for teams with high (and growing) kubernetes usage. They allow any organization to scale self-service access to Kubernetes from 10 to 10,000 engineers.
In this episode, we dig into the company's journey through a shift from being a PaaS (devpod) to virtualization of kubernetes (vcluster), the rapid feedback loop you get from having an open source-based company, why Lukas thinks open source founders should be more commercial from the start & more!
