The Breaking Point | IHP 11-0

The "End of the Jihad State" marks the defining turning point where relentless Umayyad expansion collided with devastating imperial exhaustion. Between 106 and 120 AH, during the reign of Caliph Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik, the rapid military conquests of earlier generations ground to a violent halt against catastrophic frontiers—from the siege of Ardabil in the Caucasus and the meat grinder of Khorasan to the decisive clashes in Frankish Europe and northern India.

Yet the external military disasters were only symptoms of a much deeper institutional rot. Within the empire, second-class status and economic grievances of the Mawali created widespread outrage, as non-Arab converts faced discriminatory policies like the unlawful collection of the jizya alongside zakat. Simultaneously, severe tribal factionalism between the Mudari and Yemeni confederations hollowed out the regime from within, turning governors, generals, and military garrisons into bitter rivals.

Beyond the battlefield, the social hierarchy and governance of the late Umayyad state revealed an increasingly brittle empire. From the bustling merchant hubs of Damascus and Alexandria to the religious sanctums of the Hijaz, complex dynamics governed relations between ruling Arab elites, the Mawali, non-Muslim dhimmi communities, and enslaved populations. Compounding these systemic tensions were imperial overreach, desert palaces, and Umayyad royal extravagance. While treasury coffers drained and Syrian legions stretched to their breaking point, court expenditures on sprawling irrigated estates and aristocratic excesses widened the gulf between the Damascus elite and the wider Ummah. Explore the military, political, and social fault lines that set the stage for impending civil war and the unraveling of the Umayyad dynasty.
