Transitioning from Art to Business
Before starting business school, Nassim, a second-year MBA candidate at Fuqua, shared her journey of transitioning from studying art history and working in the art world, eventually becoming a gallery director. Recognizing the limitations in her career growth within the art industry, she explored the option of pursuing an MBA to facilitate a career switch. Through extensive research and networking, including connecting with a ballet dancer turned MBA student, Nassim gained confidence to apply to business schools, ultimately getting into Duke's Fuqua School of Business.
Selecting the Right Business School
After receiving admission to Fuqua, Nassim meticulously evaluated her decision by extensively networking with current students and comparing different schools. She emphasized the importance of gauging the enthusiasm of the school's community, seeking candid feedback from students on campus life, and aligning the school's offerings with her career goals. Additionally, she proactively reached out to Fuqua's Career Management Center to gather information on alumni networks in her desired location, such as New York City, ensuring a well-informed decision-making process.
Preparing for the MBA Journey
Reflecting on her own experiences, Nassim highlighted the significance of preparing for the MBA journey, particularly for non-traditional candidates, by enhancing hard skills such as Excel proficiency and quantitative ability. She advised potential MBA students to start establishing networks early, explore various industries to understand career possibilities, and align their goals with the school's offerings. Recalling her accounting and statistics challenges, Nassim recommended utilizing online educational resources like YouTube or Khan Academy to strengthen foundational knowledge before commencing the program.
