The Final Collaboration with Film Explorer
This podcast episode marks the last collaboration between the Video Essay podcast and Film Explorer, featuring a curated video essay gallery. The final exhibition explores the theme of 'Re-Inhabiting the Image' through three video essays. The first work, 'Nazar Bazzi' by Mariam Tafakori, delves into how Iranian filmmakers created tactility and sensuality without depicting physical touch due to censorship. The film expands these considerations amidst the COVID pandemic, showcasing the added layer of touch prohibition. The second work, 'Three Time Shapes of Home' by Elizabeth Brune, focuses on the touch and movement of water, evoking a sense of place and home through the lens. Finally, the third work, 'Room with a Coconut View,' highlights the contradictions between the abstractness of the AI-guided tour through a resort and the sensory embodiment of dreams and touch. The podcast conversation reflects on the fragility, resistance, and complexities present in each video essay, challenging conventional notions of art, education, and touch.
Fragility and Sensory Engagement in Video Essays
The podcast conversation highlights the fragility and complexities of video essays, exploring how these works resist easy meanings and conventional narratives. The discussed video essays embrace the accidental, the vulnerable, and the experimental, challenging the notion of expertise and the need for clear definitions. Fragility is also present thematically, with videos touching on subjects like touch, water, dreams, and absence. These themes invite audiences to reflect on their own vulnerability in engaging with these videos and the broader fragility of the video essay genre. The conversation acknowledges the potential challenges of teaching and presenting these works, but also emphasizes the excitement and potential for learning that can arise from exploring their diverse and nuanced approaches.
Exploring Themes of Failure, Accident, and Re-Definition
The conversation delves into themes of failure, accident, and re-definition in the context of video essays. Scholars and creators discuss the subversive power of failure as a political act and how it challenges traditional notions of success and expertise. The accidental features prominently in these works, such as the unintended impact of a hand moving in the air or the accidental connection between science and poetry evoked by a wave. These themes resonate with broader discussions on the fragility of video essays, the resistance to easy meaning production, and the potential for reinvention and re-imagining of the medium. The conversation also touches on the challenges of teaching and appreciating these works, urging audiences to embrace the accidental and perceive videos as touch-points that leave lasting imprints on their senses and understanding.
The Fragile and Brave Gestures of Video Essays
The podcast conversation emphasizes the delicate and brave gestures made within video essays. It reflects on the fragile nature of editing, infrastructures, and circulation that these works contend with. Fragility exists not only thematically, but also within the physical and institutional realms, presenting challenges to viewers, educators, and researchers. The conversation acknowledges the discomfort and anxiety of failure, yet highlights the political power of embracing fragility and vulnerability. By acknowledging and appreciating the small accidents and tensions within these videos, viewers can discover new ways of engaging with filmmaking, education, and creative expression. It is the delicate balance between fragility and boldness that contributes to the unique beauty and resonance of video essays.
Immersed in Fragility, Sensuality, and Accidental Touch
The podcast conversation unpacks the interconnected themes of fragility, sensuality, and accidental touch within the video essays. The videos selected for discussion are characterized by their sensitivity to sensory experiences and paradoxical modes of sensing. Fragility is seen as an inherent component in the production, circulation, and interpretation of video essays. The accidental touch, embodied through water, waves, and the movement of images, creates a dreamlike quality in the works. These themes challenge traditional modes of understanding and engage viewers on a multidimensional level, calling attention to the complexities of the human experience. The conversation emphasizes the importance of embracing and appreciating the nuanced gestures and concepts presented in these videos and their potential for expanding our understanding of film and visual storytelling.
Today's episode features the fifth conversation between Chloé Galibert-Laîné, Kevin B. Lee and Johannes Binotto, recorded as part of the final exhibition of Filmexplorer’s Video Essay Gallery, “Re-Inhabiting the Image.” Filmexplorer, a publication based in Switzerland, invited Chloé, Kevin, and Johannes to each curate video essays centered on various themes. Exhibition five will be available to watch on the Filmexplorer website until November 30, 2022.
Episode topics include: "A video essay can express a form of embodiment that does not require the image of the body. The last selection of video essays lets emerge sensuality, where the sense of touching seems to prevail and challenge the image layer. Is this a way to re-inhabit the image? Does the haptic feature of film recall the physical dimension of early cinema?"
A special thanks to the Filmexplorer team, Giuseppe Di Salvatore and Ruth Baettig, for this collaboration.
