Deep dives
Importance of John Baptiste Morin's Work
John Baptiste Morin's extensive astrological work, particularly book 21, delves into the rejection of general significators in favor of particular significators. He emphasizes focusing on the specific houses and rulers in a chart rather than relying on broad planetary associations such as Venus ruling relationships. Moran introduces the concept of celestial state to describe planets' placements in the sky, emphasizing their individual locations and connections to house rulers.
Significance of Terrestrial State
Morin's concept of terrestrial state highlights the importance of a planet's interactions within a specific house and its ruler, aspects, and opposite house location. This detailed approach provides a more personalized and nuanced understanding of a planet's influences in a chart. By considering terrestrial state, astrologers can uncover deeper layers of individual significance beyond general planetary attributes.
Focus on Celestial and Terrestrial Determinations
Morin's emphasis on celestial and terrestrial determinations shifts the astrological lens towards specific and individualized interpretations based on a planet's celestial state, terrestrial placement, rulership in a house, aspects, and its relation to the opposite house. This method offers a comprehensive framework for analyzing birth charts with a focus on unique and tailored significations.
Utilizing Oppositional Accidental Signs
Morin's use of accidental significations, particularly in opposing houses, reveals the interconnected nature of astrological influences. By recognizing how planets in one house can inform the meanings of the opposite house, astrologers gain a more holistic understanding of a chart's dynamics and the intricate relationships between planetary placements and house significations.
Importance of Chart Combinations
Understanding the interplay of houses through derived charts and house combinations revealed a wealth of insights. Moran emphasized the significance of analyzing connections between different houses to decode various aspects of life.
Power of House Synthesis
Rooted in Aristotle's philosophy, Moran's focus on chart synthesis aimed at creating a holistic picture of an individual's life. By systematically entering through the ascendant and mid-heaven, he united diverse elements to unveil a comprehensive understanding of fate and destiny.
Timing Techniques and Divine Will
Moran's exploration of primary directions, solar and lunar revolutions, and transits paved the way for precise timing techniques. Interwoven with discussions on fate and divine will, Moran's approach uncovered the intricate dance between astrological influences and personal agency.
Insightful Approach to House Derivations
By delving into house derivations, Moran revealed the intricate web connecting various life domains. His method led to profound revelations about how houses influence one another, offering a nuanced understanding of life events and their interconnectedness.
Penelope Sitter joins the show to talk about the life and work of the 17th century astrologer Jean-Baptiste Morin de Villefranche, and her new translation of his work.
Morin was an astrologer from France who lived around the same time as William Lilly, and he wrote a massive tome on astrology titled Astrologia Gallica, which means French Astrology.
Penelope just translated book 21 of Morin’s work from Latin, which is the most important book of Astrologia Gallica, where he outlines his unique approach to chart synthesis.
Penelope became so excited about Morin's work after being exposed to it in the 2000's through the work of Robert Corre that she actually learned Latin specifically in order to translate Morin's text.
During the course of the episode we talk about Morin's life and work, and then we also get into his techniques and discuss what makes his approach interesting and different when compared to some of his contemporaries.
Along the way we talk about his birth chart and personality, and use his chart a few times to demonstrate his technical approach, which he does several times in his work.
It ended up being a fascinating discussion, introducing an important but often overlooked astrologer who was the last great court astrologer in France before the decline of astrology in the 17th century.
