Crucifixion of Robbers in Roman Times
Contrary to popular belief, Romans did crucify robbers as well. While theft involves taking someone's property, robbery involves taking it by force, and thus it carries a violent connotation. When robbery occurred on water, it was termed piracy, and the Romans were known to crucify pirates. Historical examples, such as Julius Caesar's crucifixion of pirates, demonstrate this practice.
Robbery and Rebellion
Robbery often blurred into rebellion in ancient times. Gangs of robbers would hide in the countryside, taking valuables from locals and travelers through force. Political revolutionaries would also resort to robbery as a means of survival. The Greek word 'Lestase' was used to describe individuals engaged in both robbery and rebellion, bandits, insurrectionists, or revolutionaries. This word is used to describe the two robbers crucified with Jesus, as well as Barabbas, who was engaged in an insurrection and murder.
