📺 Yaron Brook Show | July 14, 2025 | Title: Conversation w/ Norbert Michel — How the Stagnation Narrative is Threatening the American Dream
In this illuminating conversation, Yaron Brook is joined by Norbert J. Michel, one of the sharpest minds in financial policy, to explore the myth of America’s economic stagnation and its dangerous cultural implications. Drawing from his forthcoming book, Crushing Capitalism, Michel unpacks how false narratives about inequality and economic decline are fueling populist resentment and undermining belief in the American Dream. Together, they take a deep dive into monetary policy, the role of innovation, and the historical resilience of U.S. financial markets. This is a must-watch for anyone concerned about capitalism’s future and how to fight back against the cultural and policy trends that threaten it.
About Norbert J. Michel:
Norbert J. Michel is vice president and director of the Cato Institute’s Center for Monetary and Financial Alternatives, where he leads a team of scholars focused on advancing freedom through better financial regulation and sound monetary policy. He is the author of the upcoming book Crushing Capitalism: How the Stagnation Narrative is Threatening the American Dream, and coauthor of Financing Opportunity: How Financial Markets Have Fueled American Prosperity for More than Two Centuries. Michel has an extensive background in both academia and policy, having served as Director for Data Analysis at the Heritage Foundation and as a tenured finance professor at Nicholls State University. His work includes critiques of Dodd-Frank and contributions to smarter financial regulation. Michel holds a PhD in financial economics from the University of New Orleans and a BBA in finance and economics from Loyola University.📚 Crushing Capitalism on Amazon
Live Q&A Highlights:
The audience jumped in with wide-ranging and thought-provoking questions: Is the current stock market boom a result of deregulation? What will happen to developing nations if AI replaces sweatshop labor? Does the middle class's shrinking size mean decline, even if more are moving upward? Other questions explored the competitive role of traditional banks, how to combat the “China will pay” tariff narrative, and whether governments should avoid collecting economic data to prevent political misuse. There was also curiosity about Argentina’s Milei, and how to handle the resentment of those left behind in a rising economy. A rich and nuanced discussion you won’t want to miss.
