Deep dives
Mark Cuban's Investment in the Healthcare Sector
Mark Cuban has been investing actively in the US healthcare system in recent years. He believes that the healthcare system is broken and needs to be completely dismantled and rebuilt. One of the key issues in the healthcare system is the misalignment of interests between patients, providers, and payers. Mark's company, Cost Plus Drugs, aims to disrupt how medications are bought and sold by working outside the traditional healthcare system and focusing on transparency and trust. They show pricing, costs, and markups to provide affordable medications to patients.
Challenges and Successes of Cost Plus Drugs
Cost Plus Drugs, founded by Mark Cuban, started as a small-scale compounding pharmacy but expanded to focus on making generic medications less expensive and easier to acquire. They tackle the lack of transparency in the healthcare system by showing pricing, costs, and various fees. By being transparent and trustworthy, cost plus drugs gained immediate success when they launched their mail-order pharmacy. They adopted a unique marketing strategy of relying on word-of-mouth and referrals from patients, which helped them grow rapidly. Their biggest challenge now is meeting the increasing demand and keeping up with it.
Mark Cuban's Thoughts on US Healthcare System and Regulation
Mark Cuban believes that the US healthcare system is a mess and needs to be completely dismantled. He states that the execution and implementation of healthcare in the country are broken. Although he supports the need for regulation to protect patients and ensure the effectiveness of medications, he also emphasizes the importance of not over-regulating and giving too much control to politicians. He suggests that a balance needs to be struck between government involvement and private sector innovation. Cuban believes that the role of government in healthcare should primarily be focused on assisting those who cannot afford care rather than a complete overhaul of the system.
AI and the Future of Technology
Mark Cuban is highly enthusiastic about artificial intelligence (AI) and considers it one of the most exciting areas in technology. He believes there are two types of companies: those that are great at AI and everybody else. He acknowledges the challenges and risks associated with the technology, with many companies claiming to be AI-based without truly understanding it. Cuban highlights the importance of understanding the limitations and weaknesses of AI while investing in companies utilizing AI effectively and differentiating themselves in the market. He also emphasizes the need for domain knowledge and expertise to navigate the ever-changing landscape of AI.
Randomness in Life and Success
Mark Cuban values randomness in life and the unexpected opportunities and outcomes it brings. He believes that life is half-random and understands that certain things cannot be controlled. He attributes his ability to make quick decisions to his confidence and the realization that he will be okay even if he fails due to his financial stability. Cuban appreciates the balance that acting provides in his life, as it involves letting go and being in the moment, unlike his business pursuits that involve control and learning. He enjoys the fun, the challenge, and the exploration that acting offers him.
Mark Cuban (@mcuban) joins Olga Serhiyevich (@olgaserhi), head of investor relations at Village Global, on this episode. Takeaways:
- In the US healthcare system the interests of patients, providers, and payers are not aligned. This drives many of the problems in the system today and is part of what inspired Mark to get involved in trying to disrupt the system.
- Mark started Cost Plus Drugs to try to address some of the pricing issues with prescription drugs in the US. The company's pricing is completely transparent and shows their costs along with the exact fees they charge. He says that they do zero marketing and their growth comes from earned media and referrals from their existing patient base.
- Mark advises founders not to try to optimize the current healthcare system but rather to work outside of the system to bring about real change. Working within the system can bring change around the edges but commits you to working inside a system that is already broken in the hopes that an incumbent player might buy you.
- Every pitch deck that Mark sees now has an AI angle to it. He’s gone deep on the field over the last several years and says that when a person digs into many of these pitches the companies are using off-the-shelf large language models and have little defensibility.
- Precision medicine is one of the most exciting and scary emerging technologies. Mark says that in the next 50-100 years we will be able to compile all the variables that drive how our bodies and minds work and AI will be able to create a precise simulation of our bodies and how to treat them to improve our health.
- One of Mark’s favourite sayings is that “life is half random.” The conditions around a person are continually changing and contribute greatly to a person’s success.
