2. Dr. Jekyll supposedly cuts ties with Mr. Hyde, leading to a period of peace and socializing.
3. Dr. Lanyon, a friend of Jekyll, is traumatized by an undisclosed event and dies shortly after.
4. Utterson receives a letter from Lanyon, instructing him to open it after Jekyll's death.
Dr. Jekyll's Dual Identity
Dr. Jekyll experiments on himself to separate his good and evil sides, creating Mr. Hyde, a smaller, deformed man who represents all the evil in Jekyll. Hyde commits heinous acts while Jekyll feels no guilt, as he sees Hyde as a separate entity. However, Hyde begins to emerge involuntarily, forcing Jekyll to take a potion to transform back. When Jekyll runs out of ingredients for the potion, he sends others to get them, but they no longer work. Jekyll writes a confession to his friend, Utterson, explaining his situation and speculating on what will become of him.
Discovering Hyde's True Identity
Utterson and his butler, Poole, receive an unexpected visit from Hyde, who no longer resembles Jekyll. Despite the physical differences, Poole still obeys Hyde's commands. When Utterson breaks into Jekyll's laboratory, he finds Hyde dead, wearing Jekyll's oversized suit. Utterson discovers three letters inside, one of which reveals that Hyde and Jekyll are one and the same. Utterson's world is shattered by the revelation.
Jekyll's Inner Struggle
In a final letter, Jekyll explains his motivations for creating Hyde, believing that every person has a dark side. Initially, he enjoys the freedom Hyde provides but realizes that Hyde's evil grows stronger, threatening to consume Jekyll entirely. When Jekyll stops taking the potion, he transforms into Hyde involuntarily and must continue taking it to revert. Running out of ingredients, Jekyll knows he will turn permanently into Hyde. He writes his confession, ending his life as Jekyll and leaves behind the aftermath to others.
