53: Dr. Payal Sharma - How can you increase your capacity to face stress and turn from powerless to powerful?
Payal Sharma is a field researcher who studies power and stress in organizations. Through her work, she seeks to identify how, and where, people have agency and control in their job settings, particularly when challenging situations arise.
Some of her interests center on understanding the unique demands that leaders face, and how they can manage these experiences in positive ways before and after they occur. In addition, she is currently exploring power dynamics (1) on video sets in the hip hop and rap music industry; and (2) between leaders and their employees, including why leaders might resist empowering leadership. She is also the founder of an experiential stress management workshop for business school junior faculty held annually at the Academy of Management conference.
She has a Ph.D. in organizational behavior from the University of Maryland, College Park; an M.A. in organizational management from The George Washington University; an M.A. in higher education from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor; and dual B.A.s in history and anthropology from the University of California, San Diego. Prior to joining UNLV, she was a visiting faculty member at the Wharton School and tenure-track faculty member at Rutgers Business School (Newark and New Brunswick). Her professional experience includes working for the U.S. Government Printing Office in strategic human capital and at Harvard Business School in external relations.
The documentaries mentioned in our conversation were Rescue Warriors and The Selection.
She also mentioned Brene Brown's Netflix special, Grief Club, and When the Body Says No (one of my top 80 books).
