Deep dives
The Death of Community via Technology
Technology has drastically changed the way we do friendship and community, resulting in the decline of true community. Social media has made relationships effortless, allowing us to bypass the work and effort needed for meaningful connections. Furthermore, our relationships have become limitless due to the vast number of digital connections available to us. This unlimited access, however, leads to overwhelm and neglect of true relationships. Additionally, our online lives are now narcissistic, as social media platforms encourage self-obsession and the pursuit of attention. The voyeuristic nature of social media leads to envy and judgment, harming genuine community. Lastly, technology has fostered tribalism, reinforcing our tendency to only connect with those who are similar to us, hindering diversity and true unity. As a result of these technological changes, true friendship and community are becoming non-existent, contributing to loneliness, depression, and a public health crisis.
The Impact of Counterfeit Community
The rise of technology and social media has given birth to a counterfeit form of community. Though we may have hundreds or even thousands of digitally connected friends, these relationships lack depth and authenticity. Instead of real face-to-face interactions, we engage in messaging and emojis, creating a false sense of intimacy. This counterfeit community has led to a staggering loneliness epidemic, with a significant portion of the population feeling utterly alone. Statistics reveal that a large percentage of Americans report feeling unknown and disconnected. The cheap imitation of intimacy in our counterfeit online lives is taking a toll on our mental and emotional well-being, resulting in a culture that is lonely, depressed, and dissatisfied with their real lives.
Finding Hope in a Friendless Society
Amidst the despair created by our technology-driven society, there is hope in a Savior who is a friend of sinners. Jesus offers true friendship and connection, seeing and knowing us fully, yet still extending his love and friendship to us. In a world where we seek fulfillment in counterfeit communities, the friendship of God can fill the void and bring true joy. Despite the loneliness epidemic, there is a Savior who longs to be our eternal friend, accepting us as we are and offering a genuine connection that surpasses the shallow interactions of our online lives. This offers hope and a remedy to the desperate state of our society.
One massive part of our lives that has been altered by technology is community, from who we do (and don’t) have relationship with and how we communicate with them. In this week’s episode, Robert looks at the negative affects of technology upon our relationships and points us to the God who sets the example for how to relate to each other.
