The Story of Donald Crowhurst
Donald Crowhurst, a failed businessman and amateur sailor, entered a solo boat race around the world in 1968. Despite lacking sailing expertise, he sailed halfway down the coast of Africa before his boat sprung a leak. Faced with the choice of turning back and facing failure or continuing the race and risking his life, Crowhurst opted for a third option: deception. He drifted aimlessly in the Atlantic Ocean for six months, sending false radio communications to make it seem like he was progressing in the race. Eventually, he realized that if he won, his fraud would be exposed, leading him to likely take his own life. His boat was later found adrift, but Crowhurst was never seen again.
The Journey of Bernard Moitessier
Bernard Moitessier, a highly skilled sailor, was on track to win the same solo boat race. However, he became disillusioned with the attention and commercialization of the race, which he believed detracted from the purity of sailing. Feeling disgusted with the idea of performing for others, Moitessier wrote a letter to the race organizers, turned his boat around, and sailed to Tahiti. There, he built a house, married a local, and lived a content life away from the applause of others.
Impressions and Happiness
The stories of Crowhurst and Moitessier highlight the importance of making financial decisions based on personal happiness rather than seeking approval from others. The podcast emphasizes that most people are not closely paying attention to others, and living a life to impress and gain external validation is futile. Instead, the focus should be on finding internal satisfaction by aligning spending with personal values and priorities. The podcast encourages listeners to play their own game with money, rather than comparing themselves to others. It concludes that achieving financial independence and autonomy can lead to a truly fulfilling life.
Episode 2: A look at the lifestyles we all choose to live, with an old story I came across that might be my favorite example of living for the approval and applause of other people vs. doing things just because they make you happy.
