Deep dives
The Journey of Writing Success
Writing is a personal and powerful form of expression that requires authors to be authentic and confident in their voice. Alan Weiss emphasizes the importance of writing freely without the hindrance of self-editing, enabling writers to vent their thoughts naturally. He advocates for writers to treat their work as an opportunity for self-expression, rather than a potential source of external validation, arguing that the act of writing should bring personal satisfaction. This approach cultivates originality, as it encourages writers to focus on their own experiences and perceptions, leading to genuine and impactful narratives.
Building a Personal Brand through Writing
The process of developing a personal brand is intricately linked to the act of writing and the establishment of a platform. Alan Weiss shares his experience, highlighting how his initial books were strategically created to showcase his expertise, ultimately serving to attract clients and opportunities. He notes that success in publishing relies not only on writing quality content, but also on crafting a recognizable identity that connects with audiences. An effective brand is one that persists in the minds of people, prompting them to seek out an author’s insights even when they're not present.
Navigating the Publishing Landscape
The publishing industry is fraught with challenges and risks, significantly impacting how new authors are able to get original works recognized. Weiss discusses how the shift towards niche publishing allows for greater opportunities compared to the traditional model, where publishers often seek to play it safe by replicating successful titles. He points out that while established authors may enjoy more freedom in their publishing choices, newcomers still have avenues to create unique works that resonate. The evolving landscape demands that writers focus on innovation and originality to capture attention and achieve success.
'There's no such thing as writer's block. It's a myth. What you do is you sit down at a keyboard and you type a letter, and then you type some more letters, you have a word. Then you type some more words, you have a sentence. A few more sentences, you have a paragraph. What you write is better than you think, but what stops people is the self-editing, this little person in your head who keeps critiquing you. You got to kill that person, you just got to flick them off your shoulder, stomp on them 'til they're bloody. You have to sit down and write, and stop worrying whether people will like it. Just write for yourself.'
Alan Weiss's approach to writing is bracing. If you're getting bogged down in endless rewriting or self-critiquing, this is going to be uncomfortable listening. Uncomfortable, but essential.
