Deep dives
The Importance of Repentance and Battle Against Sin
Repentance is a crucial aspect of the Christian walk, particularly when it comes to battling sin. The idea of a "same-sex attracted Christian" should be rejected, as it implies a fixed identity rather than a struggle against indwelling sin. Instead, Christians should focus on recognizing and fighting against sin, understanding that it is not an inherent part of their identity. This process of repentance is both private and public, but the emphasis should be on private discipleship and accountability within the church. By recognizing the reality of indwelling sin and actively repenting, Christians can experience victory over sin and distance themselves from harmful ideologies and language.
Rejecting the Language of Sexual Orientation
The concept of sexual orientation has its roots in Freudian ideas from the 19th century. While it has become prevalent in contemporary culture, it is not biblical. Christians should not categorize themselves or others as "same-sex attracted" as it implies an indelible identity rooted in desires. Instead, the emphasis should be on recognizing sin as something external to our true identity in Christ. When talking to others about struggles with homosexual sin, it should primarily be done in the context of discipleship and within trusted relationships that provide accountability and support.
Modesty and Exhibitionism
In a culture that promotes exhibitionism and oversharing, Christians should uphold the virtue of modesty. Modesty encompasses more than just physical appearance, but also includes modesty in actions, words, and online presence. Rather than seeking attention and validation through exhibitionism, Christians should aim to express humility and live in a way that aligns with biblical principles. Modesty challenges the prevailing notion that attention-seeking behavior and oversharing are necessary for connection and instead promotes healthy and authentic relationships.
Private Repentance and Public Testimony
While testimonies can be powerful and inspiring, they should be approached with wisdom and discernment. Christians should exercise caution in sharing personal struggles or sins publicly, especially in the age of social media. Repentance is a private and ongoing process between the individual, God, and trusted spiritual mentors. While there may be certain instances where public testimony is appropriate, it should be done with great care and under the guidance of spiritual leaders. Emphasizing private repentance and accountability allows individuals to experience growth and victory over sin without compromising personal boundaries or inviting unnecessary spiritual warfare.
The importance of the regulative principle of worship
The regulative principle of worship is important because how we worship determines how we live. Doctrine affects life, and the regulative principle helps us think systematically and biblically about the world. It guides us in being courageous and upholding biblical truth. It reminds us that the Bible alone should regulate our worship, doctrine, and life, and that God's word should be our ultimate authority in all matters. It ensures that we prioritize the glory of God and rely on His word rather than human traditions or opinions.
The dangers of social media and conflict online
Engaging in conflicts on social media is unhelpful and can harm our witness as Christians. Instead of resorting to online debates, we should address conflicts face-to-face and have meaningful discussions in person. Social media can often be a breeding ground for division and unproductive arguments. Instead, we should seek resolution with grace, love, and patience. It is important to remember that not everything needs to be posted or commented on, and that it is better to address issues privately and in a personal and respectful manner.
