Deep dives
Longing for Meaning, Happiness, and Identity
People still desire meaning, happiness, and a strong identity, just like in ancient times. Tim Keller discusses how Christianity can address modern heart longings, using the scripture in the first Psalm to illustrate the contrast between following the ways of the Lord and the fate of the wicked.
Rootlessness in Modern Society
A societal shift towards 'freedom from religion' leads to rootlessness. When individuals prioritize personal freedom over rooted commitments, they become like chaff, blown about without stability or substance, as illustrated by societal trends and cultural shifts.
Consequences of Ungodliness and Chaff Lives
Ungodliness results in intellectual and personal instability, leading to a superficial and weightless existence. Society reflects this through increasing mistrust and superficial connections, highlighting the impact of disregarding foundational values and commitments.
The Path to Substance and Conviction
To combat hollowness and chaff-like existence, individuals must root themselves in God's truth. By embracing deep convictions and aligning with God's principles, a meaningful and solid life can be cultivated. Through a personal connection with God's truth, individuals can become like rooted trees, embodying substance and lasting impact.
A plant without roots is at best a tumbleweed. Is a tumbleweed freer than an oak tree? Yeah, it’s free to be blown about forever.
There is what the Bible calls a rootlessness and a weightlessness about our society right now. Many of the problems you face today are that you’ve been affected deeply by this weightlessness we experience in our culture and society.
The roots of this rootlessness were addressed long ago in Psalm 1, which tells us 1) the diagnosis of rootlessness and 2) the prescription for rootlessness.
This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on September 19, 1993. Series: Modern Problems; Ancient Solutions. Scripture: Psalm 1.
