Deep dives
The Importance of Emotions in Mahler's 5th Symphony
Mahler's 5th Symphony explores a wide emotional spectrum, with the first two movements conveying a sense of collapse and despair. However, in Part 2, Moller builds a complex Scherzo that serves as a bridge to Part 3, which introduces warm and sunny emotions not seen in the previous movements. The Scherzo is challenging and ambiguous, vacillating between light and dark. The transition from the second to the third movement is jarring, with the sudden switch from darkness to light symbolizing a new beginning. The third movement features an important horn solo part and emphasizes the importance of tempo in conveying the playful and in-between quality of the music.
The Ambiguity of Mahler's Adagietto
Mahler's Adagietto, often associated with death, is actually considered a love letter to Alma, his new wife. However, the interpretation of the movement is subject to debate due to the lack of written evidence from Mahler himself. The tempo of the Adagietto plays a significant role in shaping its character, with slower tempos emphasizing melancholy and faster tempos highlighting the expression of love. Its malleability of character allows for different interpretations. The movement's structure follows a simple ABA form, and its iconic melody is accompanied by charming and elegant responses from the strings.
The Triumph of Sunniness in Mahler's 5th Symphony
After exploring various emotions and overcoming despair, Mahler's 5th Symphony culminates in a triumphant fifth movement. The movement features a rondo structure, with the main theme recurring throughout and intervening sections offering variations and musical humor. The Adagietto serves as an interlude, and its tempo has a significant impact on the flow of the fifth movement. The movement ends with a collapsing motif, reminiscent of earlier movements, but this time it is joyous and comical. Mahler successfully guides the orchestra to an exhilarating and satisfying conclusion, ultimately bringing the symphony to its sunniest point.
I left you last week after Part 1 of Mahler’s 5th symphony, dazed and defeated. There seems to be no hope, and no way out. But as many of you know by now, Mahler reaches for the entire emotional spectrum in his music, and what Mahler builds out of the ashes of the first two movements is a complicated, difficult, and fascinating Part II, and a warm, sunny, and loving Part III. Part II is a single movement, a massive 17 minute scherzo that serves as a bridge to Part III and also is practically a full piece on its own. Part III of course contains the famous Adagietto, a love letter that leaves the listener full of questions that Mahler attempts to answer in the 5th movement, a sunny romp and the most unquestionably cheery movement that Mahler ever wrote. Why does Mahler build the symphony this way? How does a performer or an audience member deal with these hugely varied emotions? And how does Mahler build his complicated scherzo, his apparent love letter to Alma, and his both highly unusual and highly traditional Rondo 5th movement? Join us to find out!
