Deep dives
The Role of Reason and Science in Achieving Progress
Reason and science are crucial for advancing society. Advances in reason and science have led to an extraordinary progression in knowledge and have contributed to trends like increased longevity, literacy, and declines in violence. However, it is important to recognize that the human person is free and can use knowledge for wrong purposes. We should not put blind faith in reason and science or neglect the limitations of human nature. Reason and science alone cannot guarantee progress.
The Importance of Humanism in Achieving Flourishing
Humanism, which aims to maximize human flourishing, plays a vital role in advancing the well-being of individuals and communities. It provides a framework for understanding what it means to live a good life and offers a moral compass for our actions. Humanism emphasizes the importance of pursuing not only material goods, but also meaning, personal development, and relationships. By working together across religious and secular lines, we can strive towards a society that promotes the holistic well-being of all.
Christianity's Contributions to Humanism and Flourishing
Christianity has made distinct contributions to our understanding of humanism and flourishing. First, the centrality of love, as taught by Jesus, serves as a foundation for morality and ethics. Love of neighbor, even including love of enemies, is viewed as essential. Second, Christianity offers a framework for making sense of suffering and finding meaning in the midst of it. Suffering can be transformative and turn one's desires towards higher goods. Lastly, Christianity provides a path to spiritual well-being and communion with God. The teachings of Jesus and the atonement provide a means to reconcile our brokenness and empower us to love. Christianity's contributions to humanism are reflected in its emphasis on love, transformation through suffering, and spiritual growth.
Today, you may be wrestling with what "progress" means — whether it's in relation to your own journey, your family’s, or your community’s. What do you want? And how will you get there?
In this episode, two Harvard professors explore these questions. In this 40-minute Forum excerpt, you’ll hear first from Tyler VanderWeele, the director of Harvard’s Human Flourishing Program. Tyler is in dialogue with Steven Pinker, a cognitive psychologist at Harvard and author of the best-selling book, Enlightenment Now. Tyler and Steven discuss their differing beliefs about what it means to be human, the role of faith in human flourishing, and if humanity tends towards dystopia or utopia. Their discussion is moderated by Rosalind Picard, a professor at MIT’s Media Lab and an inventor. This Forum was held on MIT's campus in Spring 2023.
