Deep dives
Saint Bartholomew: The Patron Saint of Skincare
In the non-sporting group, Saint Bartholomew is the chosen saint. He is known as the patron saint of skincare and is depicted holding his own skin in his left hand, symbolizing his flaying and crucifixion. He is also the patron saint of book binders, postures, butchers, shoemakers, and Armenia. Saint Bartholomew's association with skincare is represented in the cult classic St. Ives scrub, known for its aggressive exfoliating properties with ground-up walnuts.
Saint Lidwina: The Patron Saint of Ice Skaters
In the sporting group, Saint Lidwina is selected as the saint. Saint Lidwina, who is the patron saint of ice skaters, had a miraculous story. After a skating accident, she suffered from severe gangrene and became partially paralyzed, with parts of her body eventually falling off. Despite her disabilities, she fasted constantly and gained a reputation as a healer. Her dedication to God and her connection to ice skating make her a suitable choice for this group.
Saint Margaret of Antioch: The Slayer of Dragons
For the terrier group, Saint Margaret of Antioch is presented as the saint. Saint Margaret was a Christian who caught the eye of a Roman official, but refused to renounce her faith. She was tortured and swallowed by a dragon, believed to be Satan in disguise, but emerged unharmed and defeated the dragon with a copper hammer. She is also known for her patronage against kidney disease and diabolical infestations.
Saint Lidwina, the Patron Saint of Figure Skaters
Saint Lidwina is a unique patron saint, known for her resilience in the face of suffering. Despite her body falling apart, she remained devoted to God and achieved sainthood. This makes her a fitting patron saint for figure skaters, who also face the challenges and risks of their sport. Just as Lidwina embraced her suffering and continued to serve God, figure skaters can find inspiration in her example to persevere through the physical demands and setbacks they encounter in their pursuit of excellence.
Saint Elmo, the Patron Saint of Fireworks
Saint Elmo, also known as Saint Erasmus, is recognized as the patron saint of fireworks. This association comes from the weather phenomenon known as St. Elmo's fire, which sailors believed was a protective sign from Elmo during storms at sea. The colorful sparks of fireworks mimic the visual spectacle of St. Elmo's fire, symbolizing his divine protection. By petitioning St. Elmo, those involved in the fireworks industry or enthusiasts can seek his blessings to ensure safety and a memorable display of pyrotechnics.
