Deep dives
Overview of Shelfie Awards Application Process
The Shelfie Awards recognize innovative early-stage consumer packaged goods (CPG) brands through an application process with specific monthly categories. Brands must apply during their designated month, submit a form, and send products to three different addresses by the end of that month. After a submission window from February to May, finalists will be announced in August, and winners will be revealed in mid-September. Important details, including deadlines and categories, are communicated via reminders and can also be found on links shared in the show notes and the community platform.
The Excitement and Challenges of Judging
The experience of judging the Shelfies is both thrilling and overwhelming, especially when handling over 1,500 product submissions in a single season. Judges must taste and evaluate each product, considering factors like innovation, branding, ingredient quality, and the brand's story. To ensure fair assessments, the judges often involve additional opinions from community members and industry peers during their evaluations, highlighting the deep level of scrutiny brands undergo. The process is not merely about taste; it’s also about understanding the larger context of the product within the CPG landscape.
The Importance of Accessibility and Recognition
The Shelfie Awards were established with a mission to provide free recognition to emerging brands, countering the high costs associated with traditional awards programs. This initiative allows brands to gain crucial visibility, which can lead to significant business opportunities, including connections with retailers and distributors. Winning an award significantly elevates a brand's profile, offering a competitive edge when communicating with buyers or representing their products at events. The program has proven its impact, as evidenced by past winners who have successfully expanded their reach and secured distribution deals.
Tactical Tips for Product Submission
To enhance the chances of successfully engaging judges, brands should provide well-packaged products and include marketing materials that tell their brand story. Swag items, such as promotional t-shirts or stickers, are generally discouraged as they don't contribute to the product evaluation and may be considered wasteful. Personal touches, like thank-you notes, can make submissions feel more human and relatable, reinforcing the connection between brands and judges. Overall, the approach to product packaging and presentation can significantly influence judges' perceptions and experiences.
