Summary of the importance of staying true to the Christian message in ministry
In the podcast episode, seasoned pastors Ray Ortland and Sam Albury discuss the pressure and challenges faced by church leaders and offer guidance on how to stay sane in ministry. They emphasize the importance of preaching gospel doctrine and centering every aspect of church life around the gospel itself. The pastors highlight the need for church leaders to regain a Christ-centered vision for their ministries and provide scripture-focused advice to support and guide leaders in their roles.
Insights on the shift in atheist viewpoints
The podcast episode explores the changing tone and substance in conversations between atheists and Christianity. Host Colin Hanson discusses how secular guests have become more open to Christianity, recognizing its cultural and social value. With the emergence of cancel culture and identity-based politics, some atheist thinkers have expressed concerns and even shifted their views towards Christianity. The episode highlights the surprising shift in atheism and the fractures within the new atheist movement due to differing concerns and ideologies.
The positive agenda of the new atheists
The podcast delves into the positive agenda shared by new atheists, highlighting their aim to inject a positive ethic into the movement beyond simply denying the existence of God. Some new atheists sought to embrace human rights, feminism, and LGBT issues. However, disagreements within the movement arose regarding the specific positive ethic they should embody, leading to a fragmentation of the movement. This exploration sheds light on the various perspectives within new atheism and the complexities surrounding building a unified positive agenda.
The impact of atheism and religion on society's moral fabric
The podcast episode examines the influence of atheism and religion on society's moral fabric and personal meaning. It highlights the limitations of atheism in providing a comprehensive narrative and ultimate meaning to individuals' lives, often leaving them adrift in a purposeless vacuum. The episode further explores how the decline of traditional religious narratives has led to the emergence of alternative quasi-religious stories that people latch onto for meaning. These alternative narratives, such as woke ideologies or Christian nationalism, tend to be superficial, bashing against each other and contributing to the division in society.
If you know Justin Brierley, it’s probably for the debates and interviews he hosted for many years with the Unbelievable? radio show and podcast. He interviewed some of the most outspoken atheist critics of Christianity and convened some of the most intense debates of recent memory.
During that time, however, Justin noticed a shift. The conversations changed in tone and substance—dramatically so. The bombast began to disappear. Secular guests opened to Christianity, at least its cultural and social value if not always its literal truth. They expressed concern over cancel culture and identity-based politics. Some of them made common cause with Christians. Some of the atheists even became Christians!
You can tell from the title that The Surprising Rebirth of Belief in God is an optimistic book. Justin writes, “New Atheism gave the Christian church a kick up the backside that it desperately needed. Arguably, the last two decades have seen the greatest revival of Christian intellectual confidence in living memory as the church has risen to the challenge.” You know I love the sounds of that revival.
N. T. Wright wrote the foreword. He asks, “What if the Christian story is poised to come rushing back into public consciousness in our day? Could it once again nourish the hearts and minds of people who have been starved of meaning and purpose for so long?”
How amazing that would be! We discussed this, and more, on this episode of Gospelbound.
