Deep dives
John Groot's book 'Taiwanese Feet'
John Groot, a Canadian resident of Danshui, wrote a book called 'Taiwanese Feet' based on his eight-year walk around Taiwan. The book includes detailed accounts and pictures of his journey, as well as historical information about the places he visited and the various colonial powers that had an impact on Taiwan.
The Battle of Danshui
Danshui is the area of Taiwan that John Groot knows best. He provides more detail about the Battle of Danshui, specifically the objective of the French Marines to reach the sea mine camp. The engineers stationed there had long cables leading to the mines, which they could detonate if the French ships tried to enter the river mouth. However, the French Marines were unable to reach the camp due to the effective preparation, strategy, and leadership of Imperial Commissioner Leo Mingchon and General San Chaiho.
Expats and the Battle of Danshui
The foreign community in Danshui during the Battle of Danshui was nervous about potential anti-French sentiment from the Qing forces, as they were concerned it might spill over to them. British residents even hung British flags outside their doors to distinguish themselves from the French. However, there were no reports of aggression from the Qing officials or soldiers towards the non-French expats. The British Consul, Alexander Freighter, ensured the heads of the French Marines were buried. Though the exact burial location remains unclear.
