They also uncover the ideologies of big law firms and the legal establishment and their response to Nestle's child slave labor controversy.
Corporate law firms often have an ideological stance that can lead to discriminatory responses towards expressions of solidarity with oppressed communities like Palestine.
The experiences of Rina and Janan expose the bad faith and racist response of law firms, revealing their true beliefs and willingness to suppress dissent.
Deep dives
Corporate law firms dropping employees over expression of solidarity for Palestinian cause
Rina Workman and Janan Shahadi, both aspiring lawyers, had their job offers rescinded by corporate law firms after expressing support for the cause of Palestinian liberation on social media. Rina, as the Student Bar Association President at NYU Law, sent an email stating that Israel bears full responsibility for the violence in the region, which was objected to by their future employer. Janan faced a more complicated situation, with her firm interrogating and ultimately firing her based on her participation in local chapters of Students for Justice in Palestine, public comments criticizing a resolution that only condemned Hamas, and inquiries about her Palestinian and Muslim background, as well as her family's status as immigrants.
The revealing ideology of corporate law firms
The experiences of Rina and Janan illustrate the ideological stance of corporate law firms and the legal establishment. While some lawyers argue that they are neutral arbiters of the law, situations like these expose the reactionary agenda and discriminatory responses of these institutions. The actions taken by these law firms in response to expressions of solidarity reveal their true beliefs and their willingness to suppress dissent. Their ideologies are exposed through the decontextualization and objection to statements made in support of oppressed communities like Palestine, highlighting the bad faith and racist response of these corporations.
