Deep dives
Breaching the Gaza blockade and the ensuing conflict
On October 7th, the Gaza Strip blockade was breached, leading to a conflict between Hamas and Israel. Hamas fighters entered Israeli-controlled areas, attacking military facilities and taking captives. In response, Israel conducted airstrikes on the Gaza Strip, resulting in the displacement of over a million Palestinians. The Israeli army targeted apartment blocks, hospitals, mosques, and churches to root out Hamas. After 14 days of war, convoys carrying essential aid were finally allowed into Gaza.
International Committee of the Red Cross as a neutral mediator
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) played a crucial role as a neutral party in facilitating negotiations and hostage releases. While not directly involved in the negotiation process, the ICRC's neutral stance and humanitarian mission enabled them to build trust with both parties involved. The ICRC's objective is to reunite families affected by armed conflicts and provide necessary aid. They are also working to ensure detainees in both Israeli and Hamas custody receive proper treatment and that families are informed about their conditions and whereabouts.
Challenges and urgency in providing aid to Gaza
The humanitarian situation in Gaza, described as catastrophic by UN agencies, demands immediate attention. The restricted flow of aid through the Rafah crossing has caused frustration among the population. Efforts are being made to bring in essential supplies, such as food, water, and medicine, but more substantial aid is urgently needed. The ongoing violence, destruction of infrastructure, and lack of electricity and clean water exacerbate the suffering of the 2.2 million people in Gaza. The ICRC emphasizes the importance of respecting international humanitarian law, protecting civilians, and allowing unrestricted humanitarian access to address the critical needs in Gaza.
Following Hamas's offensive in southern Israel on October 7, the Israeli army has targeted apartment blocks, hospitals, mosques and churches in Gaza, killing thousands of Palestinians.
Only on October 21, 14 days into the war, a few trucks carrying food, medicine and water were allowed into the Gaza Strip.
Will there be unconditional access to life-saving aid in Gaza as the conflict escalates?
We spoke to one of the regional heads of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) involved in the emergency response.
