Deep dives
Understanding Tests and Temptations
Life is filled with both tests and temptations that reveal our true character. Jesus emphasizes the importance of approaching these challenges with a prayer asking for deliverance from evil, recognizing that tests can also serve as traps depending on how we respond. A notable story illustrates this point through a man who, after causing a fatal accident, resorted to avoidance and dishonesty, ultimately leading to his conviction and imprisonment. This man’s narrative highlights that our instinctual reactions to small tests can set the stage for our responses to larger trials in life.
Preparation for Life's Challenges
Anticipating tests is crucial for personal growth, as Christians should not be surprised by trials. Many individuals find themselves shocked when faced with difficulties, failing to recognize that challenges are a natural part of life. It is suggested that a significant portion of distress originates from the surprise of encountering hardship rather than the hardships themselves. By conditioning ourselves to expect both minor and major tests, we can prepare to face challenges with honesty and resilience.
The Real Enemy: Sin Versus Circumstances
In facing tests, it is essential to distinguish between the challenges we encounter and the true enemy, which is sin. The primary focus should be on resisting wrongdoing rather than merely alleviating discomfort. Jesus teaches that while suffering can lead to strength and growth, sin poses a far greater threat to our integrity and well-being. Recognizing this distinction allows individuals to navigate trials without becoming overwhelmed by circumstances, focusing instead on their responses and choices.
Processing Trials Through Divine Love
Processing life's challenges through the lens of divine love enables individuals to approach difficulties with a balanced perspective. Recognizing God as a loving Father transforms our understanding of trials, alleviating anger and despair while promoting humility. Christians are encouraged to view their struggles not as punishment but as opportunities for growth within the assurance of God's love. This mindset enables believers to face adversities with a spirit of obedience and faith, understanding that their struggles contribute to their development into resilient and compassionate individuals.
A good test shows you what you really are, what’s really in you. If you’re in denial, the tests are devastating. If you’re dropping the ball, the tests are traps. Jesus says the only way you’re going to come through the tests of life is if you seek God.
How are you doing right now? Are you going through and failing the little tests, and are you setting yourself up for failure of some big test in the future? How can you be delivered from evil in the tests of life? Jesus tells you how.
Let’s look at four very practical ways of dealing with the tests of life: 1) expect the tests of life, 2) in the tests, realize the real enemy is evil, not pain, 3) process your tests through the love of the Father, and 4) see Jesus swaying, “Pray: Lead us not into temptation.”
