Scientists propose raising the hurricane scale

Scientists are proposing to raise the level of the hurricane scale to accommodate stronger storms. The inspiration for this proposal came from the recent extreme storm on the US west coast. Atmospheric rivers, which can bring twice as much water flow as the Amazon River, have become a deadly phenomenon in recent years. The existing hurricane scale, which only goes up to category 5, fails to adequately categorize and warn about stronger storms. Scientists argue that raising the scale to at least category 6, or even up to 11, would provide more accurate information and better prepare people for more severe weather conditions.
