Basketball Skill Development Coach Joey Burton saw at a very young age what bad coaching looked like.
As a high school player, Joey felt frustrated over his coaches’ blatant display of politicizing and favoritism.
Though this experience discouraged him from playing in high school, Joey remained passionate about basketball and eventually played in college.
Being a collegiate basketball athlete opened Joey’s eyes to what high-end basketball looked like, and encouraged him to eventually become a coach.
Whether it was in the collegiate or private setting, Joey has set himself apart from others due to this attention to detail, as well as helping athletes improve their ability to shoot the basketball.
So today, Joey joins me to discuss skills development in basketball.
He highlights why it’s important to not just care for your athletes, but also to let them know you care about their development.
He explains the value of demonstrating success in the early stages of coaching to improve buy-in.
And he also reveals the leading factors that determine great basketball players from good ones, and underscores the power of building athletes’ mental focus and character throughout a program.
Players don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care about getting them better. – Joey Burton
