Thomas Sowell, Alan Dershowitz, and Woody Allen share several similarities. First, all three men were born in the 1930s - Sowell in 1930, Allen in 1935, and Dershowitz in 1938.
Each of these individuals is known for being polymaths, engaging in a wide range of intellectual pursuits. Sowell has written extensively on subjects like economics, philosophy, politics, and education. Dershowitz has authored books on legal theory, terrorism, and other topics, alongside his legal career. Allen's pursuits span film directing, acting, and writing, showcasing his creativity in various forms. Additionally, all three men have had remarkably productive careers, with each continuing to produce notable works even well into old age.
Sowell, Dershowitz, and Allen have demonstrated remarkable staying power in terms of remaining active and relevant in intellectual circles. They have continued to release books, films, and other works well into their later years, refusing to retire from the work they love. This sustained productivity and influence can be seen as a form of intellectual compounding, where their work and impact steadily grow over time.
Sowell, Dershowitz, and Allen have all faced criticism and been shunned by their respective communities or tribes. Sowell's conservative views have led to him being ignored or dismissed by many within the intellectual and black communities. Dershowitz, despite being a liberal, faced backlash for defending President Trump during his impeachment trial, resulting in invitations drying up and even libraries refusing to carry his books. Allen, too, experienced shunning after facing accusations and controversies related to his personal life. Despite these challenges, all three individuals have remained steadfast in their convictions and committed to their intellectual pursuits.
In today’s episode, I take a look at Thomas Sowell’s intellectual career from a slightly unusual perspective and I do that by comparing Sowell with two other public intellectuals of his generation: Alan Dershowitz and Woody Allen.
In my view, Sowell, Dershowitz and Allen have 10 major things in common, and you'll just have to listen to the podcast to find out what they are.
