Deep dives
Course Delivery and Structure
The first year at the University of Warwick medical school is intense and primarily lecture-based. However, they also incorporate case-based learning (CBL), where students meet twice a week to discuss patient case studies related to the week's lectures. The CBL groups are diverse, comprising students from various backgrounds and degrees, which leads to rich discussions from different perspectives. The cohort size is about 190 students.
Transition from Science Degrees to Medicine
For students transitioning from science degrees to medicine at Warwick, there is some overlap in content, but the focus is more on the breadth of knowledge required in medicine. Non-science graduates often perform well in the program. The graduate entry course at Warwick fosters a supportive environment amongst students.
Anatomy Teaching and Clinical Experience
Anatomy teaching at Warwick includes seminars and hands-on sessions with plastinated specimens. Students have the opportunity to shadow consultants in clinical settings and learn clinical skills through community visits. From January of the second year onwards, students engage in clinical placements, which involve independent learning and interactions with patients.
In this Open Pod episode, Ciara and Lucy interview Bhavdeep from the University of Warwick. Warwick is a graduate-only medicine course, and so you must have already completed an undergraduate degree to apply. Postgraduate medicine is a common alternative route into medicine, and many people use their 5th choice option on UCAS to secure a place on an undergraduate course with the aim of becoming a doctor through a postgraduate degree. The graduate medicine programme at Warwick is a 4-year accelerated programme, and the entry requirements are based on your undergraduate degree (so you don’t need to have AAA at A Level to apply). For 2021 entry, you must have an undergraduate degree at 2:1 or above, a UCAT score and 70 hours of work experience. The lowest UCAT score considered by their selection centre was 2570 in 2019.
