Deep dives
Rita's Journey of Identity and Activism
Rita, an Israeli immigrant from Ukraine, reflects on her upbringing and the journey that led her to question the narratives ingrained in her from a young age. Arriving in Israel as a small child, she struggled with assimilation and cultural identity, feeling a divide between herself and the local population, particularly during her experiences in school. Rita's defiance grew as she decided to reject military service, a bold move rooted in her conviction against violence and desire for personal authenticity. This decision marked the beginning of her path towards activism, empowering her to advocate for both animal rights and human rights, ultimately leading her to engage with the Palestinian struggle.
Confronting Historical Narratives
As Rita navigated her teenage years in Beersheba, she became acutely aware of the colonial history and the societal complexities surrounding her. Through her experiences in a predominantly immigrant neighborhood, she recognized the shared struggles of Soviet immigrants, including her own family's challenges, in adapting to life in Israel. The stories of displacement, prejudice, and institutional barriers faced by her family fueled her desire to understand the broader implications of history on contemporary society. This understanding deepened further as she explored the dynamics of colonialism and discrimination in Israeli society, prompting her to critically assess her upbringing and beliefs.
The Awakening to Palestinian Voices
Rita's transformative encounters began when she started engaging with activists who supported the Palestinian cause, enlightening her about the lived experiences of Palestinians. The conversations she participated in opened her eyes to the harsh realities of occupation and shared human struggles, challenging the perceptions she had grown up with. Rita emphasized the importance of dismantling the walls—both physical and psychological—that separate Israelis from Palestinians. This desire to promote understanding led her to advocate for dialogue and connection, asserting that true lasting peace can only arise from recognizing each other’s humanity.
The Complexities of Identity and Belonging
Rita wrestled with her identity as an Israeli, struggling to align her beliefs with the actions of the Israeli state. While she acknowledged her privileges and the complexities of her existence within a contentious narrative, she often found herself at odds with societal expectations and the dominant ideologies around Zionism. Rita expressed a sense of alienation from traditional narratives, being acutely aware of the injustices faced by Palestinians while grappling with her own family’s history. This inner conflict drove her to advocate for change, seeking a more humane approach to coexistence through education and empathy.
A Call for Connection and Understanding
Ultimately, Rita's experiences reinforced her belief that healing can only begin through genuine interpersonal connections across cultural and social divides. She urged for dialogues between Israelis and Palestinians, advocating that these encounters could foster mutual understanding and compassion. Rita's message emphasizes the need for individuals to break free from the narratives that cast people as enemies, suggesting instead that curiosity and openness are essential in addressing the human costs of conflict. By prioritizing human relationships over political ideologies, she envisions a future rooted in empathy and shared humanity.
Rita, now in her 30s, immigrated from Ukraine With her family as an infant. While struggling to assimilate as a teenager living in the city of Beer Sheva, she was introduced to some different ideas about the world than the ones she was used to hearing. This led her to decide not to serve in the military even though the law required it. At 17, without knowing anyone else who had done this at the time, she was scared but determined. We met in an activism chapter in our college, and have been good friends ever since.
Today she works with youth at risk and does her best to model for them how to stick to their own truth no matter what.
Before we start, it’s important to note that we recorded this episode almost a year ago, before the Russian Invasion of Ukraine, so take that into account while listening.
I created and funded this podcast privately. I don’t belong to any organization, nor does it represent anyone other than myself.
Secondly, I don’t intend this content to provide a justification or excuse for the actions people interviewed did in their past, but rather to learn from their personal experiences and gain insight as to what the process of transformation looks like. Certain parts of the episode could be triggering for you, and I advise taking into consideration that some of the events discussed are morally and ethically challenging (to say the least).
And lastly:
I acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land on which I work as the indigenous people of this country, and pay my respects to their elders, past and emerging.
