Best explanation I heard about yesterday was Bob Pasoni on CNBC. The VIX ($UVXY/$SVXY) that it monitors now - CPI data, Fed and Elections. 2 of the 3 with the readout yesterday are off the table and we know about. That made people move to safety.

Money went to places where people expected growth like $AAPL $MSFT and Energy 

This setup and run up happens right before earnings which should be brought down
