Deep dives
Trusting in God's Voice in the Darkness
In his early 20s, Jamie Winship learned to trust in God's voice in the midst of darkness while working as a police officer. He found that the darker the situation, the more God's light shone through. This led him to rely heavily on hearing from God and seeking His guidance in his daily tasks. One powerful example was when he was searching for a missing child and, in desperation, asked God how he would know if God was communicating with him. He suddenly felt a sickening feeling in his stomach, prompting him to stop a car and discover the missing child in the trunk. This incident highlighted the importance of obedience and the need to explain these interventions in a way that is understandable to others.
Developing the Discipline of Hearing from God
Jamie Winship emphasizes the biblical basis for hearing from God, stating that God is the God who speaks. He encourages asking God questions and paying attention to the thoughts and sensations that come in response. This practice of fixing our eyes on Jesus, asking for guidance, and listening for God's response cultivates a closeness and reliance on Him. Jamie shares that the more he engaged in this discipline, the more confident he became in discerning God's voice, experiencing moments of divine intervention that aligned with his desperate prayers. He also emphasizes the importance of documenting these experiences, making them accessible and relatable to others.
Moving into the Darkness and Trusting God
Jamie Winship advocates for Christians to embrace darkness rather than avoid it. He points out that congregating in insulated groups away from darkness goes against the example set by the early church. Instead, believers should move into the darkness, bringing the light of Christ and the Kingdom of God. Jamie recounts instances where he intentionally engaged in the most challenging situations, relying solely on God's guidance to navigate through them. These experiences taught him to actively trust in God in the darkest moments and to expect that God's voice would guide him even in seemingly impossible circumstances.
Progressive Growth in Sensitivity and Response
Over the course of his faith journey, Jamie Winship has experienced a progression in sensitivity to God's voice and response. He clarifies that this growth comes with consistent practice and an ongoing discipline of seeking guidance from God. Jamie acknowledges that there may be periods when the response may appear less present, but he emphasizes the importance of trusting God's timing and remaining faithful. He highlights that obedience and faithfulness lead to greater responsibility, authority, and influence, aligning with God's desire to use individuals who are willing to depend on Him completely.
