Ep 15 - How to Run an Effective Meeting
Today we talk about the importance of preparation in leading an engaging, helpful, effective meeting. We’ve all sat through great meetings… and we’ve sat through meetings that felt like a waste of time. Leaders must think critically, thoughtfully, and carefully through how we structure meetings.
In this episode we talk about the structure of a meeting, the questions to ask before you lead a meeting, and the principles you should enact in the meeting.
The 4 V structure for every meeting you lead should include:
- Value
- Victory
- Vision
- Voice
We also look at the crucial questions you should ask yourself regarding meetings:
- Who really needs to be here?
- How frequent should we have the meetings?
- How long should the meeting be?
- How can I make this meeting as hard as possible for people to fall asleep or tune out?
- Can I ask my people to do some preparation or pre-work before coming to the meeting?
- What is the brief, compelling, and clearly stated purpose of this meeting?
We finally, we explore several principles for how to run a meeting, including ensuring you always end the meeting by asking the David Allen question: “Who is doing what by when?”
