Deep dives
Google's change in location data handling impacts geofence warrants
Google announced important changes to the way it handles users' location history data, making it difficult to respond to geofence warrants. Geofence warrants require a provider to search its entire user location data to identify all users in a geographic area during a specified time. These warrants violate the Fourth Amendment as they inevitably sweep up people unrelated to the crime. Google's changes include storing data on the user's device, deleting data after three months, and automatic encryption when backed up to the cloud.
Intel announces Gaudi 3 AI chip to challenge NVIDIA and AMD
Intel aims to be a significant player in the AI revolution with its newly announced Gaudi 3 generative AI chip. The chip, set to launch in 2024, will compete with NVIDIA's H100 and AMD's MI 300X. Intel also introduced core ultra chips for Windows laptops and PCs, along with fifth-generation Xeon server chips that include a specialized AI part called an NPU for faster AI program execution.
Apple considers deploying OLED screens in iPads and foldable iPad plans
Apple plans to use advanced OLED screens in high-end iPads by 2024 and a MacBook model by the second half of 2025. While the timeline for foldable iPad plans is uncertain, reliable analyst Ross Young suggests they may not be released until 2025 at the earliest. Apple is exploring the transition to OLED displays for its iPad lineup and anticipates the launch of OLED iPads in 2024 before a potential foldable iPhone.
