Deep dives
The Power of God's Presence
In Psalm 84, David expresses his longing to be in the presence of God. He desires to be near God's tabernacle and to experience the glory and joy that come with being in God's house. David recognizes the surpassing greatness of being in God's presence, even comparing it to being a doorkeeper in the house of God, which is better than dwelling in the tents of wickedness. He yearns for the springs of living water and strength that are found in God's presence.
Pressure Points to Idolatry
Anxiety and pressure are often indicators of idolatry. When we feel anxious or overwhelmed, it is a sign that we are looking to something or someone other than God to meet our needs and provide security. This could be a good thing, like a job, a relationship, or a possession, that we have elevated to the status of a god in our lives. However, these false gods are unable to fulfill our deepest needs and desires. As a result, we experience pressure and worry. Recognizing this idolatry allows us to redirect our focus and trust back to God and rely on His presence and provision.
Gateway to Glory: Asking for God's Presence
Experiencing God's presence and encountering His glory requires a conscious choice to seek and ask for it. Just as David longed to be in God's house and at the threshold of his presence, we too can intentionally position ourselves to receive more of God's presence. This involves asking God for His presence, seeking Him through prayer and worship, and being open and expectant for Him to show up in our lives. By acknowledging our need for God's presence and actively pursuing Him, we create a gateway to experiencing His glory and power.
Choosing Presence Over Pressure
In the midst of anxiety and pressure, we have a choice to make. We can either continue to rely on our false gods and idols, leading to more anxiety and worry, or we can choose to prioritize God's presence and trust in His power and faithfulness. This means acknowledging our need for Him, surrendering our worries and concerns to Him, and seeking His guidance and peace. By choosing presence over pressure, we shift our focus from earthly concerns to eternal truths, finding rest and peace in the presence of our loving Heavenly Father.
