NotYourOrdinaryParts S4 Episode 1: White Fragility with Dr. Robin DiAngelo, Ph.D.
Dr. Robin DiAngelo is an Affiliate Associate Professor of Education at the University of Washington, she holds two Honorary Doctorates, and her primary area of research is in Whiteness Studies. Dr. DiAngelo has been leading courses and facilitating workshops on issues of racial and social justice for more than 25 years and as a public speaker she provides keynote presentations on whiteness, white fragility, race relations, and racial justice. Dr. DiAngelo is the author or coauthor of several books, including the number-one New York Times bestseller - White Fragility, a book about race relations in the United States. Dr DiAngelo coined the term “White Fragility” to describe what she views as any defensive response by a white person when their whiteness is highlighted or mentioned, or their racial worldview is challenged, whether this response is conscious or otherwise. Dr. DiAngelo believes that the journey to confronting racism head on and effectuating change is painful at times, but there’s nothing more growth enhancing and challenging on every possible level than this journey.

Life can be hard at times and if you’re like me, you may tend to think that you can handle it all on your own. Maybe you’ve done such a good job of “managing for so long” having to do something different or talk to someone can feel uncomfortable. The idea of therapy, to me, felt like I had to admit that there was something wrong with me or that I’d be showing the world that I was broken or didn't have it all together… but when my health started to suffer, and I was anxious 24/7… I realized my body was trying to tell me something was wrong and I learned that there is no “good health” without mental health. Therapy was the answer for me, it helped me put down all of the heavy things that I was carrying that didn’t belong to me. While therapy can provide so much relief, finding a therapist can feel so daunting.
