The Usefulness of the Cross

In his commentary on 1st Peter 4, Calvin discusses the usefulness of the cross, highlighting two aspects: refining trial of faith and becoming partakers with Christ. Gaffin's review of Hermann Ritterbos' study of Paul introduced a redemptive historical approach to the American theological world. This approach emphasized the inseparability of Christology and eschatology and the pervasiveness of eschatology in the gospel message. Gaffin also emphasized the already not yet aspect of Christian life, as believers experience resurrection life in the present, yet await its full manifestation.
