The Gaming Persona What Retro Remakes Reveal About Who We Become
Vacation is supposed to quiet your brain, but what happens when your brain is wired like a quest log? We’re back from an anniversary cruise with a very modern problem: trying to relax while still juggling work responsibilities, access requests, and the nagging feeling that progress never pauses. That jump from Caribbean downtime to real-life “support tickets” becomes the perfect setup for a bigger conversation about how games train us to chase goals and how hard it can be to truly log off.
From there, we share two surprisingly game-shaped experiences. First, a Key West stop that turns into a delicious memory, then a wild dining show called La Petite Chef where projection mapping makes your tabletop look like a video game level complete with a tiny chef, an AI rival, and a full-on boss fight that ends with the real course landing in front of you. Then we get back to actual gaming and talk Steam Deck life: buying classics like Final Fantasy VII, picking up Clair Obscur Expedition 33, and spending precious “play time” wrestling with updates, Wi‑Fi sign-ins, and settings that remind us why PC gaming can feel like a hobby inside the hobby.
The heart of the conversation is nostalgia and remakes. We react to the Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time remake coming to Switch 2, why that game still hits so hard, and how its long, delayed-gratification quests taught patience in a way that echoes through MMOs, achievement hunting, and even school and career goals. We also dig into the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy and its meta story about fate, agency, and whether a remake should simply preserve the past or challenge it.
