Deep dives
The Wasp Program and Their Sacrifice
During World War II, a group of American women pilots, known as the Wasp, played a vital role in the war effort. They volunteered to fly military aircraft, testing and ferrying new planes to departure points. Despite facing resistance and prejudice, they exceeded expectations and proved their abilities. The WASP flew 60,000 miles, fulfilling non-combat missions and testing aircraft, often performing dangerous tasks like towing targets for anti-aircraft practice. Although their service was crucial, they were not officially recognized for their efforts until decades later.
The Struggle for Recognition
After the war, the Wasp faced challenges as they sought recognition for their service. It took them 33 years and a strong lobbying effort to finally be acknowledged as veterans. In 2009, they were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest honor Congress can bestow upon civilians. Their journey to receive recognition was long and difficult, highlighting the persistence and determination of these brave women.
The Heavenly Reward and Christian Service
The story of the Wasp pilots serves as a reminder that Christian service, like their sacrifice, often goes unrecognized or undervalued in this present world. However, as Christians, we have the assurance of a heavenly reward that surpasses anything we could hope for or imagine. In Christ, we have a sure and eternal reward. Our heavenly reward is beyond comparison, and Jesus Himself is our ultimate reward. As we serve and persevere, let us remember that this world is not our home, and our labor for Christ is never in vain.
The Importance of Remembering Our Reward
When we face weariness, discouragement, or rejection in our service to Christ, remembering the heavenly reward can provide us with strength and renewed perspective. No suffering or hardship we encounter on earth can compare to the eternal glory that awaits us. Let us remain steadfast in our obedience and devotion to Christ, knowing that He values and rewards our efforts, even if we don't see the immediate results. Our sure and exceedingly great reward is found in Jesus Christ, and we eagerly anticipate the day when we will be in His presence forever.
Leslie Ludy is the special guest for this twenty-sixth installment in Eric Ludy’s epic summer series covering the contentious and war-torn season of American history from 1914 to 1974. In this episode, Leslie unpacks the fascinating history of the Women Airforce Service Pilots in WW2 and reminds us that even if we are walking through suffering, discouragement or rejection in the service of our King—we should not grow weary. The suffering we may experience now is not even worthy to be compared with the glory that awaits us in eternity.
