Deep dives
Tesla and Ford's Earnings
Tesla and Ford both reported earnings, with Tesla experiencing a tough day in the stock market and the NASDAQ seeing its worst two-day performance. Despite this, Tesla's performance has held up relative to the NASDAQ. Meanwhile, Ford's EV business continues to struggle, reporting losses of $3.1 billion year-to-date with a negative e-bit margin. Ford announced a delay in $12 billion worth of planned spending on EV manufacturing capacity and other investments, citing the need to balance production of gas, hybrid, and electric vehicles to match EV adoption rates.
BP Acquires Tesla Charging Hardware
In a surprising move, BP announced that it will be acquiring $100 million worth of Tesla's V4 supercharging hardware. This marks the first time Tesla is allowing other companies to purchase and deploy its superchargers. The BP branded chargers will have an output of 250 kilowatts and support CCS charging. They will also incorporate the plug and charge protocol for simplified and automated payments. Tesla's head of IR stated that this deal is significant and will benefit EV transition by providing more fast chargers for EV owners at BP-owned stations.
Hertz's Challenges with Tesla EV Fleet
Hertz reported challenges with their EV fleet, which consists of 80% Tesla vehicles. Maintenance costs for EVs remain lower, but collision and damage repairs are higher compared to internal combustion engine vehicles. Tesla's price cuts have also impacted the residual value of Hertz's EVs, resulting in financial implications. Hertz plans to increase the number of EVs in its ride-sharing fleet, adjusting the allocation of EVs between leisure rentals and ride-sharing. They anticipate purchasing EVs at lower price points in the future, which could reduce repair costs.
