Deep dives
ZipLine's Platform 2: The Aha Moment
The aha moment for ZipLine's Platform 2 came when they realized the potential of the droid, a small, precise delivery mechanism that is lowered from the main aircraft. The droid has its own perception, control, and compute capabilities, allowing it to navigate and land with great precision. It can navigate in high winds and deliver packages to small landing spaces, such as a table on a porch. The decoupled control system between the droid and the main aircraft ensures robustness and reliability.
Challenges and Limitations in Last-Mile Delivery
One of the biggest challenges in last-mile delivery is ensuring practical reliability. The engineering required to maintain and inspect the delivery system is a complex task. Other challenges include autonomy, weather conditions, regulatory constraints, and offline and online optimization of delivery routes. ZipLine has invested heavily in addressing these challenges, including developing a solution for sensing and avoiding other aircraft using a passive microphone array. Another challenge is reducing noise, which ZipLine has achieved by redesigning propellers and making breakthroughs in propeller design.
The Significance of ZipLine's First US Last-Mile Flight
ZipLine's completion of its first US last-mile flight in November 2023 marked a significant milestone. It highlighted the successful implementation of the acoustic detection and avoidance system, paving the way for future drone deliveries in the US. This milestone signifies the readiness of ZipLine's system to operate in complex radio tower environments and showcases their ability to continuously develop and improve their delivery capabilities. It also reflects the broader shift towards autonomy in the future of flight, democratizing access to airspace and enabling various applications, from drones to flying cars.
Development of Platform One
Platform One was developed to provide a working prototype for testing and proving thesis ideas. It is a fixed-wing drone that offers long range and low cost, addressing the demand for efficient delivery systems in supply chains.
Challenges and Lessons Learned in Early Deployments
Early deployments of the drone system revealed challenges in areas like weather conditions and climb performance. These issues required design adjustments and the development of AI-based weather forecasting to ensure safe and reliable operations. The team also realized the importance of customer engagement and understanding their needs to build a successful product.
In this week's episode of the podcast, co-hosts Mike Oitzman and Gene Demaitre discuss the current state of Zipline with Keenan Wyrobek, who is the Chief Technology Officer and also one of the firm's co-founders. Additionally, we learn some more details on the design of the new ZIP delivery "Droid" from the chief droid engineer, Stephen Killian.
Gene attended the Manifest, logistics tradeshow in Las Vegas earlier this week, and gives us an update on what he saw at the show.
