The Three Aspects of Training: Virtue, Samadhi, and Wisdom
The path to liberation consists of three aspects: virtue, samadhi, and wisdom. These qualities may appear separate, but they ultimately converge as one. Upholding virtue requires wisdom, while cultivating wisdom purifies our actions and speech. Virtue is developed by abandoning wrong and cultivating right actions, leading to a steadfast and unwavering heart, known as Samadhi. This stable mind unifies and strengthens our Dharma practice, allowing a deep inquiry into the reality of our experiences.
The Unity and Evolution of Virtue, Samadhi, and Wisdom
Virtue, Samadhi, and wisdom mutually reinforce and strengthen each other on the noble eightfold path. As wisdom increases, Samadhi becomes firmer, and as Samadhi strengthens, virtue becomes more unshakeable. These three aspects intertwine to overcome defilements and eradicate suffering. The strength and speed of progress on the path depend on our innate capabilities, spiritual aptitude, and accumulated merit. By practicing diligently and developing these qualities, we attain peace and unshakeable insight into the nature of reality.
The Role of Knowing and the Path to Liberation
The knowing mind observes and teaches the thinking mind, guiding it to examine emotions and defilements. This process leads to peace of mind and the realization that grasping and craving are inherently undesirable. The knowing mind, born out of this process, leads to wisdom. It's crucial to bring theoretical teachings into our hearts and experience them personally, as mere intellectual understanding falls short of true insight. It takes dedicated practice and internalization of the Dharma to truly know and see reality. Reflect, investigate, and develop your own understanding of the teachings.
